SPACE PULSE

Monday, September 28, 2026 — Evening Edition

⚡ TL;DR

ESA's Juice spacecraft completed a critical Earth gravity-assist flyby today, skimming the outer atmosphere to sharpen its trajectory toward Jupiter with minimal fuel cost. [1] A busy day overall: Crew-13 sits on the pad, Artemis II crew enters the public spotlight, and elevated solar electron flux continues above 3,000 pfu.

🚀 LAUNCHES

CREW-13 ON THE PAD

  • SpaceX Falcon 9 and Dragon rolled out to Space Launch Complex 40, Cape Canaveral, on Sept. 27 and raised vertical; liftoff is no earlier than a date NASA has not yet pinned down publicly. [2] [3]
  • Four crew members will travel to the ISS to conduct research, technology demonstrations, and maintenance aboard the orbiting laboratory. [4] [3]

UPCOMING — ISRO SSLV RIDE-SHARE (NET October 31)

  • ISRO's Small Satellite Launch Vehicle will carry AayulSAT-1A, an in-orbit refueling demonstration satellite from OrbitAID Aerospace, plus additional payloads whose identities remain TBD. [5]

UPCOMING — LONG MARCH 12A FLIGHT 2 (NET October 31)

  • China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC/SAST) plans the second test launch of the Long March 12A rocket; payload identities are also TBD. [6]

🔭 DISCOVERIES

JUICE GRAZES EARTH'S OUTER ATMOSPHERE

  • ESA's Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer executed a successful Earth gravity-assist on Sept. 28, using Earth's gravity to bend and accelerate its course toward Jupiter while consuming very little propellant. [1]

NASA SWIFT BOOST MISSION: LESSONS LEARNED

  • A commercial mission to raise the orbit of NASA's Swift X-ray observatory concluded without achieving the planned orbit raise; NASA and its industry partner are publishing lessons learned to benefit future in-space servicing programs. [7]

NEW GREENLAND ICE-BED MAP

  • A new NASA-supported map of the terrain beneath the Greenland Ice Sheet connects hundreds of previously missed or fragmented valleys, improving models of ice flow and sea-level rise. [8] [9]

🛰️ MISSIONS

JUICE — EARTH FLYBY SUCCESS

  • ESA confirmed Juice skimmed the very outer edge of Earth's atmosphere on Sept. 28, successfully completing the gravity-assist maneuver en route to the Jovian system. [1]

ARTEMIS II CREW — FIRST HOUSTON PUBLIC EVENT

  • The four Artemis II astronauts will appear at a University of Houston event to discuss their Orion circumlunar mission; this is the first public Houston event following their lunar flight. [10]

ARTEMIS ACCORDS — 76 SIGNATORIES

  • NASA welcomed Albania, Croatia, Côte d'Ivoire, and San Marino, pushing total Artemis Accords participation to 76 countries as of Sept. 28, 2026.

ISS NIGHTTIME IMAGERY

  • Astronaut Jessica Meir photographed the United States at night from the ISS at 259 miles altitude on Sept. 8, 2026, at approximately 3:40 a.m. local time, with New York City prominent at center.

☀️ SPACE WEATHER

ELEVATED ENERGETIC ELECTRON FLUX — ONGOING

  • NOAA SWPC issued a Continued Alert (ALTEF3, Serial 3747) at 0500 UTC Sept. 28: the 2 MeV electron integral flux as measured by GOES-19 has been above the 1,000 pfu threshold since Sept. 26 at 1535 UTC.
  • Yesterday's peak reached 3,060 pfu at 1720 UTC Sept. 27, the highest recorded in this event series, roughly triple the threshold level.
  • An earlier ALTEF3 event on Sept. 10 also exceeded the threshold, peaking at 1,037 pfu on Sept. 9, indicating persistent high-energy particle activity across much of September.
  • A G2 geomagnetic storm watch issued Sept. 8 was cancelled Sept. 9, with observed levels falling below G1 on both Sept. 8 and Sept. 9.

📄 RESEARCH

JWST DETECTS UNEXPECTED METHANE EMISSION FROM YOUNG BROWN DWARF

  • Using JWST low-resolution spectroscopy, researchers found methane emission (not just absorption) from a low-mass brown dwarf (2–10 Jupiter masses) in the young cluster IC 348, a feature atmospheric models had not predicted; the 3.4-micron aliphatic hydrocarbon band was also confirmed.

FERMI-LAT 16-YEAR HARD-SOURCE CATALOG RELEASED

  • The Fourth Catalog of Hard Fermi-LAT Sources (4FHL) lists 673 objects detected between 50 GeV and 2 TeV across 16 years of observations, providing the deepest survey yet of the highest-energy gamma-ray sky.

NEUTRON STAR EQUATION OF STATE VIA SET TRANSFORMER AI

  • A new machine-learning model called a Set Transformer ingests variable-sized sets of neutron star mass, radius, and tidal deformability measurements and reconstructs the equation of state of ultra-dense matter, offering a flexible tool ahead of new multi-messenger observations.

TIDAL DISRUPTION EVENTS IN NUCLEAR STAR CLUSTERS SIMULATED

  • Simulations show that nuclear star clusters co-existing with supermassive black holes (like those surrounding Sgr A*) significantly influence the rate at which stars are tidally disrupted and debris accreted, linking cluster dynamics directly to black hole growth.

MIRANDA'S ORBITAL TILT CONSTRAINS URANUS'S TIDAL DISSIPATION

  • The unusually large orbital inclination of Uranus's moon Miranda is used as a fossil record to constrain how efficiently Uranus dissipates tidal energy, connecting the moon's present-day tilt to ancient resonance passages and the planet's interior structure.

YOUNG STARS NEAR SGR A* — PARADOX OF YOUTH ADDRESSED

  • A new study proposes a solution to why young B-type stars exist so close to the supermassive black hole Sgr A* where star formation should be suppressed, pointing to a near-absence of binary companions in the S-cluster as a key observational clue.
