🔭 DISCOVERIES
ROMAN SPACE TELESCOPE - SURVEY MISSION BEGINS
- Roman will survey billions of stars and galaxies in visible to near-infrared light, probing dark energy, dark matter, and exoplanet populations with a field of view roughly 100 times wider than Hubble's. [2] [9]
- ESA confirmed the successful liftoff, noting Roman will complement European observatories conducting infrared sky surveys. [4]
SN 2025wny - FIRST MULTIPLY-IMAGED SUPERLUMINOUS SUPERNOVA
- Astronomers report SN 2025wny, a hydrogen-poor superluminous supernova (SLSN-I) at redshift z = 2.015, gravitationally lensed by two foreground galaxies (z = 0.376) into five resolved images — the first strongly lensed SLSN ever discovered. [10]
- Space-based follow-up with HST and JWST yielded the most detailed rest-frame UV observations of any SLSN, plus the densest photometric coverage of a high-redshift core-collapse supernova to date.
- Time-delay measurements between the five images are being used as an independent probe of the Hubble constant H0, entirely free from the distance-ladder assumptions plaguing other methods.
HAT-P-1 b ATMOSPHERE - NEW MOLECULES DETECTED
- JWST NIRSpec G395H transmission spectroscopy of hot Jupiter HAT-P-1 b, part of the Exoplanet Grand Tour Survey, detected water, carbon dioxide, and a possible hydrogen sulfide signature in its atmosphere.
EXOPLANET POPULATIONS - KEPLER ARCHITECTURE MODEL
- A new forward model, ExoMOD, calibrated on Kepler DR25 data, statistically characterizes orbital architectures and transit timing variations in close-in multi-planet systems, refining mass and spacing estimates across thousands of planetary systems.
🛰️ MISSIONS
BEPICOLOMBO - CRITICAL SEPARATION MILESTONE
- ESA and JAXA held a media briefing on 31 August 2026 covering the upcoming separation of BepiColombo's Mercury Transfer Module, a complex engineering challenge on Europe and Japan's first mission to Mercury.
ROMAN COMMISSIONING - UNDERWAY
- Roman's three-month commissioning phase has begun: systems are being powered on, calibrated, and tested sequentially during transit to L2; science operations are expected to follow after arrival. [3]
ISS EXPEDITION 75 - SPACEWALK CONFIRMED
- NASA and ESA confirmed ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot and NASA astronaut Jessica Meir will begin a navigation and science maintenance spacewalk on 1 September 2026 at 07:30 EDT, with live coverage on NASA+.
DSN GOLDSTONE - NEW ANTENNA ONLINE
- NASA's Deep Space Network formally activated Deep Space Station 23 (DSS-23) at the Goldstone complex near Barstow, California, a new 34-meter multifrequency beam-waveguide antenna dedicated on 25 August 2026.
- DSS-23 joins four other 34-meter antennas at Goldstone, boosting overall DSN capacity for tracking deep-space missions including Roman and BepiColombo.
MTG-I2 / ESA AUGUST HIGHLIGHTS
- ESA's August 2026 recap confirmed the launch of Meteosat Third Generation Imager-2 (MTG-I2) aboard Ariane 6, plus ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot's historic spacewalks and live coverage of a total solar eclipse from Spain.
SENTINEL-2 - NEPAL FLOOD RESPONSE
- ESA's Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites imaged the catastrophic flash flood that struck northern Nepal on 26 August 2026, providing emergency responders with damage assessment imagery across the inundated region.
MICHIBIKI No. 7 - RESCHEDULED
- JAXA rescheduled the launch of the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System satellite QZS-7 aboard H3 Flight No. 9; the revised launch date has been announced following an earlier postponement.
☀️ SPACE WEATHER
ELEVATED RADIATION BELT ELECTRONS - ONGOING
- NOAA SWPC issued a continuing ALTEF3 alert on 31 August 2026 at 11:47 UTC: GOES-19 recorded 2 MeV electron integral flux exceeding 1,000 pfu, with yesterday's maximum reaching 1,264 pfu.
- This elevated electron flux event has persisted since 21 August 2026, with a prior alert continuation issued 24 August noting a daily maximum of 1,026 pfu.
- High 2 MeV electron flux can charge spacecraft surfaces and damage satellite electronics; operators of assets including newly launched Roman should monitor closely during commissioning.
GEOMAGNETIC DISTURBANCE - MINOR
- NOAA SWPC issued a WARK04 warning on 31 August 2026 at 08:58 UTC forecasting a geomagnetic K-index of 4 (minor storm threshold) valid through 15:00 UTC, with onset conditions detected at time of issue.
📄 RESEARCH
SN 2025wny SERIES - COSMOLOGY WITH A LENSED SUPERLUMINOUS SUPERNOVA
- Five coordinated papers (arXiv 2608.28413 through 2608.28430) present HST/JWST imaging, spectroscopic and photometric time delays, and a full lens model for SN 2025wny, enabling a new H0 measurement independent of traditional cosmic distance ladders. [10]
HABITABLE WORLDS OBSERVATORY - CONTRAST GAP QUANTIFIED
- An arXiv study combined JWST in-flight mirror telemetry with active coronagraphy models to quantify the technology gap between JWST and the planned Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO), targeting 10^-10 raw contrast for imaging Earth-like planets around Sun-like stars.
- A companion paper introduces pyEDITH, a Python-based coronagraphic exposure time calculator built specifically for HWO mission planning and noise simulation.
RADIATION BELT ELECTRONS - SOLAR MAGNETIC CONTROL
- A new arXiv study finds that the outer radiation belt's coherent variability at solar-cycle, seasonal, and 27-day Carrington timescales is governed by solar magnetic configuration, not just particle flux alone — with implications for space weather forecasting.
QUASI-PERIODIC ERUPTIONS - RELATIVISTIC JETS IMPLICATED
- Researchers present evidence that relativistic outflows power a quasi-periodic eruption source associated with a supermassive black hole, placing new constraints on its energetics, mass-loss rate, and X-ray emission mechanism for this poorly understood class of transient.
MILKY WAY 3D MAP - 6.5 MILLION RED CLUMP STARS
- Using Gaia DR3 low-resolution XP spectra, astronomers constructed an all-sky catalog of 6.5 million primary red clump standard candles, enabling the highest-resolution three-dimensional mapping of the Milky Way's structure to date.
ASTEROID APOPHIS - INTERNAL MASS DISTRIBUTION
- A new inversion framework applied to Apophis uses dynamical observations to probe its internal mass distribution without requiring close-range spacecraft, relevant to hazard assessment and mission planning ahead of Apophis's 2029 Earth close approach.
