SPACE PULSE
Sunday, 16 August 2026 | 22:00 UTC
⚡ TL;DR
ESO's VLT chemical fingerprinting of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS — older than the Sun and the brightest interstellar object ever seen — remains the week's defining science story, while the Aug. 12 total solar eclipse over Spain and Europe continues to generate fresh imagery and data from NASA, ESA, and MTG-I1.
The week closes with a busy launch slate, active arXiv output across 67 papers, and geomagnetic activity that has only recently quieted to background levels.

🔭 DISCOVERIES
INTERSTELLAR COMET 3I/ATLAS
- ESO's VLT obtained the first chemical fingerprint measurements ever made for a comet originating outside the Solar System, finding 3I/ATLAS is older than the Sun and the brightest interstellar object yet detected. [8]
- The compositional data provide the first concrete clues to where in another stellar system 3I/ATLAS formed, opening a new window on extrasolar planetesimals. [8]
BETELGEUSE COMPANION
- A VLT team led by Miguel Montargès has produced the clearest image yet of what is likely a companion star to Betelgeuse, providing the strongest evidence to date that the famous red supergiant is not alone. [9]
2026 TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE — AUGUST 12
- The Moon's shadow swept Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, the Atlantic, Spain, and a corner of Portugal on Aug. 12; ESA's MTG-I1 satellite captured the umbra tracking across the Iberian peninsula in real-time. [10]
- NASA composite imagery from San Millán de los Caballeros, Spain, shows the full progression of totality; NASA Earth Observatory also published a complementary "sunflower's view" sequence.
PERSEID METEOR SHOWER
- The 2026 Perseid shower peaked around Aug. 12-13; NASA APOD featured bright Perseid bolides photographed from Sweden on Aug. 15.
SATELLITE MEGA-CONSTELLATION THREAT
- An ESO study found that proposals to launch over 1.7 million satellites — including extremely bright ones — would have "devastating consequences for astronomy," recommending a cap of no more than 100,000 faint satellites below naked-eye visibility.
SUN AND SPACE-WEATHER AI
- NASA's COFFIES project (Consequence Of Fields and Flows in the Interior and Exterior of the Sun) is applying AI and data science to predict which solar active regions are most likely to trigger space weather events, supporting future lunar and deep-space exploration planning.
🛰️ MISSIONS
INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION — EXPEDITION 75
- The Expedition 75 crew spent the week reviewing procedures and checking spacesuits ahead of a spacewalk planned for Aug. 18 to remove and replace a high-speed space-to-ground antenna on the station's exterior.
- Science activities included Canadarm2 robotic arm maneuvers, virtual reality experiment runs, and space exercise research.
CARRUTHERS GEOCORONA OBSERVATORY
- Launched September 2025, the Carruthers observatory is operating from an L1 halo orbit; new arXiv modeling work presents numerical simulations of its GeoCoronal Imager (GCI) data to refine understanding of Earth's exosphere.
NASA SCIENTIFIC BALLOONS — FORT SUMNER 2026 CAMPAIGN
- Six balloon flights carrying scientific experiments, technology demonstrations, and student payloads are set to launch from Fort Sumner, New Mexico, starting mid-August.
HUBBLE vs. ROMAN
- NASA published a new explainer on how Hubble and the forthcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will operate as complementary instruments to broaden cosmic perspective.
AD ASTRA COMMUNITY SCIENCE WORKSHOP
- NASA Astrophysics Division has scheduled the Ad ASTRA Community Science Workshop for Sept. 1-3, 2026, to engage the community in defining priorities for future large strategic astrophysics missions.
☀️ SPACE WEATHER
- NOAA SWPC issued a K-index 4 (Active, minor G1-threshold) WARNING on Aug. 14 at 10:54 UTC, valid through the end of that day, with onset conditions cited.
- A Type II Radio Emission alert was also issued Aug. 14 at 07:15 UTC, with the associated shock front estimated at 671 km/s — a sign of a coronal mass ejection launching from the Sun.
- Conditions have since returned toward background; no ongoing G-scale storm warnings are in the current data window.
- For reference, a 10 cm Radio Burst (200 sfu peak flux, 2-minute duration) was recorded on Jul. 22 at 06:32 UTC, indicative of that earlier active period.
📄 RESEARCH
LHS 1140 b HELIUM ATMOSPHERE CONTROVERSY
- Two independent JWST NIRISS teams each analyzed four transits of habitable-zone super-Earth LHS 1140 b (1.7 Earth radii, 5.6 Earth masses) and both report no detection of escaping metastable helium, challenging a 2026 claimed detection by Cherubim et al. and tightening constraints on any hydrogen-helium envelope.
- A companion paper calls its result "strict limits" on helium absorption, with implications for whether the planet hosts a substantial atmosphere at all.
JWST DETECTS PRE-EXPLOSION PROGENITOR OF TYPE Ia-CSM SUPERNOVA 2026sqf
- Pre-explosion JWST imaging of NGC 3310 reveals a dusty AGB-like source at the site of SN 2026sqf, a rare Type Ia supernova showing strong circumstellar medium interaction — providing direct progenitor evidence for this unusual supernova class.
ROTATING RADIO TRANSIENTS — 27 NEW DISCOVERIES BY MEERKAT
- MeerTRAP's commensal single-pulse search at MeerKAT has found 27 new Galactic rotating radio transients; arcsecond positions were pinned for 14 of them via imaging of the transient capture buffer.
WANDERING INTERMEDIATE-MASS BLACK HOLE
- A new arXiv paper reports a 35,000-solar-mass black hole displaced from its galactic nucleus and being fed by a gravitational wake — offering direct evidence for the wandering IMBH population predicted by hierarchical galaxy assembly models.
FERMI-LAT LARGE-SCALE GAMMA-RAY STRUCTURE IN SOUTHERN GALACTIC HEMISPHERE
- Using 17 years of Fermi-LAT data, researchers identify and characterize a new large-scale diffuse gamma-ray structure in the Southern Galactic Hemisphere, distinct from the Fermi Bubbles, with energy-dependent morphology pointing to an unresolved cosmic-ray or dark matter origin.
LIGO O4 DETECTOR CHARACTERIZATION
- The LIGO collaboration has published a detailed account of detector characterization during the second and third segments of the fourth observing run (O4), describing how noise mitigation enabled confident detection of hundreds of compact binary coalescences and supported deep astrophysical inference.
That's your Space Pulse for Aug. 16, 2026. Clear skies and sharp signals.
